What is the GRI Standard?

The Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) is the world’s most widely used sustainability reporting framework. Developed in 1997, GRI helps organizations, from small businesses to global corporations, understand and communicate their environmental, social, and governance (ESG) impacts in a consistent, comparable way.

  • GRI Standards are voluntary, modular, and multi-stakeholder:
  • Universal Standards: Core principles applying to all organizations
  • Topic Standards: Specific metrics on environmental, social, or governance topics
  • Sector Standards: Guidance tailored to high-impact industries like energy or agriculture
