What is the Extended Multi-Regional Input Output (EMRIO) model?
An extended multi-regional input-output (EMRIO) model is an analytical framework used to assess the economic and environmental impacts of trade and consumption across different regions or countries. It extends the traditional input-output analysis, which describes purely economic interdependencies between different sectors of a single economy, by incorporating multiple regions and adding extra dimensions such as environmental or social impact indicators.
At Atlas Metrics, we’ve extended the 2023 release of the OECD input-output tables (based on data from 2020) to create region and sector specific average emission factors, expressed per economic activity (e.g., tCO₂e/€ of revenue). These spend-based emission factors are particularly useful for assessing emissions in Scope 3 categories such as Purchased Goods and Services, Capital Goods, and Business Travel.
