What do I need to do in SFDR?

Under the Sustainable Finance Disclosure Regulation (SFDR), every fund must be classified as an Article 6, Article 8 or Article 9 financial product.

The classification depends on the level of environmental or social intent built into the investment strategy.

Article 6

Funds do not promote environmental or social characteristics and do not have a sustainable investment objective. They may take sustainability risks into account, but these considerations are not a defining part of the investment strategy.

Article 8

An Article 8 fund is one that promotes environmental and/or social characteristics as part of its investment strategy.

To fall under Article 8, a fund must:

  • Include specific, binding criteria related to the environmental or social characteristics it promotes, and
  • Apply these criteria consistently in its investment decisions.

Article 8 funds do not need to have a sustainability objective for all their investments, but they must clearly describe the characteristics they promote and how these influence the investment approach.

Article 9

An Article 9 fund is a fund whose primary objective is to make sustainable investments, as defined under SFDR.

This means the fund invests with the intention of contributing to an environmental or social objective, and this objective is central to the fund’s strategy.
